I have been reading up on UK insurance technology lately and wanted to get a clearer picture of where the sector actually stands, since it seems to cover a lot of very different things beyond just comparison websites. Here is what I have pieced together so far, anyone would appreciate correcting me or adding context.
Embedded insurance seems to be a major area right now, insurance products sold directly within another company's checkout or platform, things like travel insurance offered at the point of booking a flight, or device insurance offered when buying a phone. Usage based and behavioral insurance also comes up a lot, particularly in car insurance, where pricing is based on actual driving data collected through an app or device rather than broad demographic assumptions alone.
Claims processing technology seems to be another significant area, using automation and sometimes AI to speed up and reduce the cost of processing claims. There also seems to be growing activity in underwriting technology, using more granular data sources to price risk more accurately, and in managing general agents, smaller specialist businesses that design and distribute niche insurance products while an established insurer carries the actual underwriting risk.
What I am still trying to understand is how much genuine technology differentiation exists in UK insurance technology versus how much success depends on relationships with established insurers who still hold the regulatory licenses and capital needed to actually carry risk.
